I would not consider doing shocks without the special socket that fits on the top of the shaft both front and rear shocks. The real killer is installation of the driver's side front, but the socket is also useful on the rears. Lisle makes one for about $8, might have packaging identifying it as a tool for GM X-body cars. Parts chains carry it but are often out of stock. Snap-on or Mac tools have them, too. Be careful using the socket to remove the rear, because the shock stud can break off and jam the socket. BTDT.
Removal of the front shocks doesn't need a special tool because you can easily snap the shaft so you don't have to wrench the top nuts. Just remove the lower shock mount nuts and pull back and forth on the shock body until the shaft snaps. Then lift out the scrap from the top.
I would spray all the nuts and bolts a couple of days in advance with PBlaster. Even so, the lower rear bolt might need an 18" breaker bar to persuade the bolt/nut.
For the shocks, you do not need a special tool. The tapered shaft of the ball joint will pop out of the steering spindle if you give the eye of the spindle where the joint is bolted 5/6 hard whacks with a hammer.
Wear old clothes, the job is very dirty.
