I stand by my recomendations. The "snap the shaft" trick on the front shocks always works fine. Learned it from a Saab expert. Typically, the shock stud will be corroded and weak to facilitate snapping anyway. Also, the shock tower mount is strongly reinforced where the stud passes. If this shock tower is danger of breaking from pulling on the shock, I don't think the car should be driven as/is with new or old shocks.
The special socket is shaped to hold the top of the shock shaft, sort of a flat sided oval. Then to install the shocks, you put a box end wrench on the nut and turn the shaft to tighten/loosen the nut. If you do not have this socket, options are available: 1) an air wrench will spin on the nut, 2) Thread the shock nut on the shock stud several times before installation to defeat the "nylock" insert, but then you shoud really throw on an extra nut to lock it. You will smile when you see how well the socket works on the driver's side front shock. For $8, it's not even worth debating.
I think Frak is talking more about the rear shocks, which do not really require special tools. The rear shocks are the only ones that need to be compressed to removed and the special tool here is muscle.
I also do not understand why a lift would help that much, since you don't work under the car. I prefer sitting on a small kitchen stool while working one wheel at a time with that corner supported by a jackstand.
