just took a drive after a fairly extensive suspension rebuild. bilsteins all around, 4 new ball joints, SAS poly swaybar bushings, and a new a-arm (stripped shock mount)+ a-arm bushings. BTW, if your front shocks are oem or really really old, reefing them back and forth and snapping them off in the wheel well works GREAT. saved me alot of time. my shock towers are in really good shape, however. for the rears, if you are installing bilsteins, grind the edges of the steel sleeve inside the lower shock bushing down a bit cuz they are a really tight fit otherwise. get the lisle shock tool (i paid about $10 online including shipping) its definitely worth its weight...
the ball joints were in such bad shape that with the spring unloaded, i had about 1/4 inch of play at the steering member! glad i changed them when i did.
it drives so much better, i can hardly believe it. the biggie was probably the ball joints, but i love the feel of the new bilsteins as well. lots of people say that they are too stiff, but for where i live, lots of fast twisty country roads, long highway drives, and the occasional long dirt road, they are just right. definitely firmer than what i've been used to, but so much more responsive. the car feels really really strong, say going around a corner with a couple of off camber bumps, or the occasional cattle guard.
can anyone give me some alignment advice as far as what people have done other than what saab reccomends for camber/caster adjustments etc.?
if it wasn't for this board, i would have had a much harder time with this project. thanks all!!
