The caveats that I'd add to the discussion are:
Even if they offer a $#itload of extra money and good bennies, make sure that work conditions would actually change for the better if you decide to stay. Some job situations can be so intolerable that additional money relieves your mood for a few weeks. Then it's back to SSDD. And lousy work conditions can grind away at your spirit.
Be careful about your back and joint health as a mechanic. Being a couple of decades older than you and having been doing my own work for a very long time, I'm discovering all sorts of new pains after a few hours of leaning over a hot engine. Not to mention a long-lasting darkness in my fingerprints and a few cuts after a day of SAAB doctoring.
That said, changing job direction at your age can change your life for the better.
Good luck. We're cheering for you.
