Ok, I've been trying to read up on this because I fear my transmission may be coming close to the end. My 89 spg has 173,000 on it; original transmission. The trany feels strong, it never grinds or anything and is exceptionally smooth, except in 5th gear I get this weird humming noise. I've driven 900s with a 'whine' in 5th gear, but this seems to be more of a low rumbling/growling, almost like the tires need to be balanced or something (wishful thinking!?). The car does not do this in any gear but 5th. I've owned it for about two months and in that time, it has popped out of 1st once (chalked it up to not having the shifter in all the way) and it popped out 3rd last night for the first time (chalked it up to.. i mean, just tried to ignore it). Anyway, I'm hoping that I can drive the car through two more semesters at school, until I can save up and fix it next summer. Bad news accepted, good news prefered.
