check your inner drivers. Start with the one on the exhaust side. The driveshaft goes in there (okey, it actually comes out) and there is a tripod bearing on the end that goes into the housing. Check the driveshaft for play. If you feel it has movement in the housing (that is on the side of the engine) your bearing might be shot. This is known to cause a low hum, and since the inner driver rotates with the speed of the wheels, the hum starts occurring at higher speeds. Which again may coincide with your shifting to fifth gear.
I don't specificallly disagree with the other post, it may well be that your tranny is toast, but it is something you can check. The passenger side inner driver I'm speaking about goes out first because the heat of the exhaust causes the grease to run or dry or evacuate out of there.
Be careful not just to take the driveshaft out and have a look at the bearing. You might end up with dozens of needles from the bearing over the floor and an undriveable car. Check http://www.townsendimports.com for pictures or buy a bentley/haynes manual.
