You must hold the shaft from turning. There are flats on the top of the shock. Do yourself a big favor and buy the GM shock socket at your local auto parts store. Made by Lisle, costs about $6.oo.
Then just use a box wrench to hold the nut, and turn the shaft with the new socket. Also helps for installation
