My heat won't shut off

I recently bought a '84 900 that had been sitting for some time. We had a little cold snap so I went to turn on the heat. It didn't seem to want to go on, in fact it actually turned itself back a couple of times. Finally it stayed on. Now it won't go off. The nob feels like it's totally disconnected now. I don't see anything under the hood that looks like it would be a valve to turn the hot water off and on, so I'm assuming it is inside the dash. I really don't want to have to tear the dash apart, can someone tell me what I want to hear?
