The amount of poor materials used by various car manufactures is truly mind-boggling! The US DOT has issued and enforced so many items on foreign manufactures (and US), and due to incredibly high manufacturing costs, they are forced to used substandard materials, and cut corners. As you said RS, the “crushable” dash material has plagued so many carmakers and took decades to master and become impermeable by sun and dryness.

It’s interesting that you bring MG up, as to me the greatest crime ever conducted in the auto industry by our government, was MG’s (and all British sports cars for that matter) largest market (the yanks) imposing impractical safety and emissions standards on imported vehicles, thus more or less forcing an already hurting English auto industry, into total bankruptcy! There were some other factors (British Leyland being a sublime example of how not to run a company that’s backed by the U.K government), but still, what a total shame!

I once did a study on the crash impacts of gray market vehicles vs. US DOT bumper’d and equipped vehicles and the difference was astonishingly minimal!

Sorry for the soap box here, but if we would stop wasting money on programs such as NHSTA, and fix the bloody myriad of potholes and poor road conditions to bring them to the quality of Europe’s, we would be better severed and directly addressing safety.

But ya know, Jaguar had to get rid of the "leaper" (the cat perched on the hood)in the '80's, because it very well could have come thru the windsheild or the rear window of the opposing car.....Ya...Right, thanks DOT.

It's interesting though, I wonder who paid who at Ford to get one put back on the hood of the new S-Type serious? Suddenly safety wise, that feline was ok!

Cheers-

;-)
