When I bought my '86 about 5 years ago for $1450, it had 232,000 miles on it. It had a whining pinion bearing, exhaust leak, a wiring non-start issue, and had been sitting outside for about 3 years!
After the P.O. took it to the dealer, it started and ran fine. I never did figure out what the wiring "issue" was exactly, but I know it was related to the crumbling insulation that '85's and '86's have.
I think that is the only "gotcha". The wiring in the engine compartment may look ok, but if you touch it at all, the insulation will turn to dust and all kinds of things can happen. The worst ones are at the distributor plug, the wires to the APC soleniod (above the radiator) and the 5th gear switch (down under the turbo). All are repairable with heat shrink or electrical tape (there may be some already!). About a year ago I replaced most of the wiring with new, just as a maintenance project.
