Valve Cover removed, new gasket.... now burning oil?

I removed my valve cover to replace the upper timing chain guide and reinstalled everything with new gaskets.
Everything seems tight and i don't see any leaks, but i'm now burning oil as it smells awful and i when i look under the hood i can see smoke. It appears to be coming from the middle 'pipes' (manifold?) under the engine, directly under the middle spark plugs.(it can be seen when standing on the passenger side of the car... for engines like my '86 900S with a tranny dipstick, the tranny dipstick tubes attaches to what i'm refering to as this 'pipe' for stability)
As i said i can't see any leak coming from the valve cover area... is there likley a leak there and i just can't see it OR is it more likely some oil that landed on the pipe when the valve cover was removed and it will just take a little while to burn itself off?
Any additional checks i can do?
THANKS!!
