Wow. This thread came back from the dead...
Notice that reverse isn't quite straight down from 5th. You have to move a little bit further to the right. The collar on the shift lever SIMPLY lifts a pin at the bottom end of the lever, so the lever can move that last bit to the right. It's pretty common for that little pin to be either broken or adjusted wrong. That's completely un-related to the grinding.
The grinding is because the transmission is still spinning, and reverse doesn't have a synchro. Read my post in this thread about 'any forward gear'. Compared to most other cars, the C900 transmission's input shaft seems to have a lot more rotational inertia. So when you want to shift into reverse you have to wait a bit longer for it to coast to a stop.
The car's also old enough... Maybe the clutch is dragging a little bit? So when you press down the pedal it's not COMPLETELY disengaged? Use one of the forward (synchronized) gears to get the input shaft stopped. Then shift into reverse. This same thing goes for any ToyoHondAcurNizzan whatever. Almost nobody puts synchronizers on reverse.
