Still looking for the right manual transmission Turbo Convertible Saab...and I would like to get some opinions and advice on one which I have found.
It's a 1994 with medium high miles - approx 145 K - the second owner is selling it, apparently it's been well maintained during its life by both owners. I haven't test driven it yet but am getting a list of what's been done to it from the seller.
Big pluses: an almost new top.... and it looks like a Comm Ed (wood grain dash, tan top, black paint and grayish asymetrical alloy wheels).
Minuses, so far: right outer CV boot is worn, needs replacing; front brakes are worn, need replacing (don't know if it's just pads or how the rotors are).
I'm assuming there will probably be a few other things wrong with it which need fixing...which brings me to the last minus: having spent a few years struggling through the "Compleat Idiot" VW book to fix some of my older VW's, I've reached the conclusion that I'm a bad DIY/home mechanic and apart from oil changes should probably pay someone who knows what they're doing to do the real work.
Other big Minus: the area I live in (Southern Oregon) doesn't have ANY mechanics who specialize in Saabs. There are some excellent mechanics here, however, some of whom have done *some* work on *some* Saabs...
My questions for all the Saab experts out there -
* I know it's better to buy cars with low miles than high miles but - IF this car has been well maintained throughout it's life - is it okay to buy in spite of the relatively high mileage (145K vs lower mileage Saabs, of between 80-110K)?
* I know this is a subjective question but - what's it worth? Owner wants close to $5K but my budget is closer to $3-4K...I'm hoping we can work out a compromise but I'd like to get a sense from veteran Saabies (is that a 'proper' noun?) of what would be a good price to pay. (I realize car pricing in general, and Saab pricing in particular, tends to be an extremely subjective area.)
