As far as the engine goes, the physical swap is easy. If the '86 is a 900S (whti the 16-valve engine), the differences are minor ...
You'll have to swap the AMM, throttle body, distributor, and AIC valve onto the '89 engine from the '86. The throttle body on the '86 has threading to mount the dashpot. The only thing that may be missing on the '89 engine is a thermoswitch on the block near the A/C bracket, You should be able to splice the ends of the cable that goes to the thermoswitch together and close the circuit.
If it's a base 900 (8-valve) or a Turbo, you'll want to swap over the whole wiring harness along with the engine. (major wor, but doable.)
