The book calls for RTV gasket sealant. My mechanic recommended not using it, so I stopped. I've actually never had a valve cover leak, either, so maybe there's something to it...
I do use a little to "glue" the gasket into the channel on the valve cover. Flipping it over and mounting it can be quite difficult - it tends to flop all over the place.
