Find a good indie first......get it inspected, look for history, condition, do not buy an auto (unless you want to replace it, like me). Learn to work on it (I do not have the time....so I pay) Be prepared to spend in 4 years (purchase price included) about the same as a new Corolla/Civic would cost you to buy (If you are lucky you will not pay this much but be prepared!)
I have a 88 900 TC I will probably never get rid of it as I love it so much, but I have had new auto transmission, steering rack, front engine mounts, inner drivers and radiator. The car looks pretty good and is like new to drive, but if you have to pay an indie for repairs, these cars are not cheap, if you can do it yourself you will save lots of money.
It will be a long time before I get rid of my 900 (my wife reckons never!) and do not reget buying it, but on the negative side be prepared to spend..........if you are lucky you may be someone who posts they have done 200K with very little money spent, I hope that will be the case!
