Just another day for DIY

Finally, some beautiful weather to get a bunch of stuff done this past weekend. In 5 hours on Sunday I managed to replace the left side lower A frame bracket (the original unit had bad bushings), upgraded the left drive axle and inner driver. When I removed the inner driver, I was surprised (not really) to find that the mating surface on the tranny side was considerably damaged. A previous mechanic had obviously used a pry bar to remove the i.d.. When he reinstalled it, a lot of gasket sealant was used. I spent considerable time preparing that surface, removing all former sealant, steel wooling everything, including the also damaged shims, then cleaning with solvent before reapplying red (copper) sealant and bolting it back together. So far so good. The only bad thing to happen was burning a finger on the exhaust manifold while refilling the tranny case. After a necessary shower, the 10 mile test drive and reward steak dinner afterwards went smoothly. No more noise and vibration from the suspension when I brake hard (caused by the former shot A frame bushings), and no oil drips under the car this morning. I call that a good DIY day!
