I think what Dick means is that the wire is broken inside its own black insulation. Not inside the alternator. You can take the wire OFF & check it's continuity with an ohm-meter while you bend & wiggle it.
Or just add another ground wire. Anything to make a GOOD electrical connection from the alternator body to the engine block.
