Like it or not that actaully sounds like a reasonable price--you can easily spend $3000 plus on a rebuilt/new trans alone. It's not a lot of fun but what are thre options? You can get a used transmission and fix it for half that amount, but what have you got? A trans that could last 50,000 miles or 5,000 or less--you don't really know. You could sell the car with a bad trans and get basically nothing. You could trade it in and with some clever financing you could put yourself in a newer car with out coming up with any money out of pocket--but that's going to cost you a lot more than $4K. Add up all those payments to get the true picture. Three hundred a month is $3600 just the first year. Beleive it or not fixing it and fixing it right is actually the cheap way out. Sorry.
