Front brake pad replacement, uneven wear 87 900s Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Wed, 5 May 2004 14:18:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My front brakes are starting to squeel now so I had my mechanic check it when I was getting a new muffler. He told me 10%/40% left on my pads so they are not wearing evenly, replaced about 20K miles ago. Likely one of the calipers was sticking causing the uneven wear. If I let him replace calipers & pads (maybe rotors too) it'll be lots of $$ several hundred at least as he was quoting caliper to be over $200, pads, rotors, and labor would probably be another couple hundred. This is also my spare/winter car so I am trying to keep expenses low, I just spent $300 on tires and $200 for the muffler, don't want spend another $400-500 on brakes if possible.
Questions: I replaced rotors and pads on my '89 myself with his assistance, but the '87 has the front handbrake so it is more complicated (I do have a Bentley's). How difficult would pad, rotorand caliper replacement be for the '87? Can I just replace pads and go with what I have and expect faster/uneven wear, or do I need to replace the caliper as well and spend the extra $120 for the part and while I'm at it replace rotors too? Parts would be north of $200 vs ~$30 just for pads.
Thanks
