Ok, my uncles 91 900 Automatic is driving me nuts. Any help or advice I can get here is appreciated. He was driving it home a couple of months ago and decided to stop at a rest area for coffee. When he got back to the car he put it in reverse, backed up, put it in drive, and sped off. Unfortunately the tranny decided it wasn't going to shift out of first. I had driven the car a few weeks previous to this and I noticed no signs of trouble.I checked the obvious and easily accessible things first. Kickdown cable was adjusted properly and wasn't seized. Shifter and cable were working properly. Fluid showed no signs of being burned. I pulled the rear pan and checked the governor and associated pipes. Everything looked good and functioned properly. I pulled the front pan and found that the detent valve was stuck. I got a used valve body from a friend (It came out of a properly shifting 900) and installed it. Upon dissassembling the old valve body I found that the spring that returns the detent valve to it's rest position was bent out of shape. So I figure that was the problem and put it all back together, fill it with fluid, and drive it. To my surprise it still would not shift. I rechecked the obvious stuff. Everything looked good. The only other thing I can think of at this point is that the governor seals have gone bad. In my 8 years of fixing Saabs (No, I don't do it anymore) I have never seen this in a 900 (Replaced plenty of them in 9000's) Does anyone have any ideas as to what the deal is here? I am very frustrated. Thanks in advance.
