Heater control rod connection problem - HELP!

Well, I'm close to finishing up the long job of replacing my heater control valve on my 1990 900.
New problem- when I reconnected the control rod to the new valve, with the dash fashia pull out a bit, now the control rod seems to have come off on the dash dial side. I can hear it banging around if I reach through the speaker hole and move it, but of course, I can't reach it or see it. It's connected alright on the control valve end, but seems to be hanging free off the dial, and the dial doesn't move the control rod at all.
How do I reconnect the rod on the heater dial end now??
Thanks,
