Got back to the control rod tonight...
I took the radio out (removable Clarion) and then removed the metal basket the radio fits into.
It's a press-in fit metal unit, attached to the backer connections to the radio.
Once pulled out of the dash, there are 4 screws, 2 on each side. Once out, you can reach the heater control rod and reconnect it to the back of the dashboard dial control.
Then you just reverse the process, put it all back, double check that the control rod is still connected and operates properly via the speaker hole in the dash, and then put the basket and radio back and enter the security code in the radio...
