Here's a good one for you:
I have been trying to identify an annoying metallic noise from my '90 900 turbo engine at 2,000 to 2,500 RPM. Nothing at idle, nothing at mid to high RPM. It truly sounded like a timing chain noise, but the tensioner was only extended 8mm (max. allowed is 11mm) and the guide inside the valve cover is new. After running the engine with the valve cover removed (yes, this is messy) and still hearing the noise from the chain area, I decided to roll in a new chain. The noise did not change (of course), but only then did I finally see the cause of the noise: The power steering pump was about to fall off its bracket!
One of the 3 screws holding the pump to the mounting bracket was gone, the other 2 were loose, and the rubber-insulated metal clamp holding the metal (fixed) portion of the pressure line was broken as well. Fortunately the 3 mounting bolts can be accessed through the holes in the pulley, and I was able to replace/tighten them. I also replaced the clamp and the noise is gone.
Plus, I have a new timing chain now. :)
I recommend checking these bolts...I noticed bolt(s) missing on more than one of our used pumps too. They are 13mm by the way.
