1994 C900TC CE at 76k - ready to go to Ozzfest today
The top has been acting flakey, and I messed with relays, etc. The symptons are that the motor will go in the UP direction, but not the DOWN direction. I've traced that I get the proper +/- 12V up to the convertible top motor connector based on flipping the Up/Down switch. Based on some suggestions I put straight 12V onto the motor connection, effectivly bypassing all upstream crap. I just made a small wiring harness that I could clip between the motor and jumper cables at the battery.
Try #1 - only a battery. Not enough juice either way.
Try #2 - battery connected + running engine. Up direction OK, Nothing on the down direction.
My conclusion - the motor is messed up. Perhaps some brushes, a Diode, an internal fuse, whatever.
Based on the extreme price of a new motor ($985), would an electric motor repair shop be my best bet?
What fluid will I use when I reinstall the motor? Is the stuff available at the dealer? Is it terribly expensive?
Any clue what a motor from Goldwing or English-Swedish spares might go for?
Are these motors special? Meaning could I get a motor from an old mustang or olds? I know American Sunroof Corp (ASC) build this top and motor, just like on Toyotas, Fords, and most others... I wonder how unique the motor really is.
Oh, the Manual Mode operation (flip bypass valve) is easy going down, but a chore coming UP. That hydraulic system gets a workout!
