The tranny job can be justified if you love your car, but what keeps people from replacing/rebuilding their transmissions is the fact that you can often easily find another 900 turbo or spg for only slightly more than what the rebuild will cost. A replacement with lower mileage can often be found. The replacement has usualy undergone many of the usual saab repairs and may already have a new headgasket, steering rack, brakes, shocks, etc...
I suspect that this will change in years to come, but that's what usually happens now. It's often difficult to go against the fact that you can easily just get a whole new/newer/different car.
If you have put a lot of time and money and personal effort (and/or upgrades) into your car than there's a better probablilty you'll be inclined to go the transmission replacement route.
It will be interesting to see what happens in years to come regarding the value of 20 to 30 year old saab 900s in good shape.
