Steve,
I am just getting my feet wet, so to speak, in the LH 2.2 world (with my '87 SPG). I am a K-Jet man since I started SAABing in 1995, but I digress...
Anyhow, I would make sure that the connector plug to the AMM has good connections. I have heard of situations where the pins inside the AMM outlet sometimes do not make good contact with the AMM wiring plug if a terminal is loose and/or "backs out" of the plug. Unplug the wiring harness from the AMM and look into the plug to make sure no terminals are recessed farther than the rest. If they are, you might have to slip back the rubber boot on the plug and push the wire forward to get its terminal up even with the rest.
If the AMM plug is not the culprit, I would try testing the coolant temperature sensor. On my '87 SPG, it's blue in color and is located between the intake manifold runners #2 and 3, down on the cylinder head.
Since you have a Bentley 16V book, I won't quote the resistance specs to you (and I don't know them off the top of my head, anyway). Somewhere in the Bentley 16V book is a spec chart for this sensor with a column of temperatures paired with a column of resistance readings in ohms.
I doubt it's anything to do with the AIC valve.
