Bentley manual which says you should put bead at the half moons and at distributor. I have recently been through this three time in the last month and I finally broke down and did it right. First remove cover, clean oil out of head near cam followers, then use razor blade and drag backwards gently with slight pressure across surface to scrape away any build up then use scotch brite (greeny weenie?) and softly scower seating surface till nice and smooth, dry again, apply gasket beads per Bentley and while waiting for it to develop outside skin use razor blade on valve cover itself as you did on head surfaces and finally apply very slight amount of oil on gasket itself then reassembly and tightening according to Bentley inside and center first then outside bolts finally torque to 11 ft #'s. Oh might want to use the dental floss trick to hold c\gasket in place then cut floss and pull out of bolt holes after setting on head.

Just my opinion and it finally stopped the slight oil leak I had.
