Hello all,
I have a 1994 900T conv. 156000 miles on car, 60k on engine. I have had this car for 3 years and am an avid Saaber, and like* to think I know a thing or two about them, but we will see. The reason behind this email is possible sabotage from either a mechanic or individual. The trail starts with strange sounds coming from the alternator region of the engine bay. The sounds remind me of hard metal clanging, at first it thought it was my a/c comp. grinding but that was ruled out when I notice the alternator was way past its upper limit meaning it was rubbing the coolant hoses coming from the firewall. Upon further inspection I saw one mounting bolt missing and one so lose it was spinning from the frequency of the engine. It appears the only thing that is holding the alt. on is the tensioning arm? When I discovered this I thought to myself how in the hell do these bolts come lose, and how long have I been driving on the brink of disaster? The alternator charges fine and the belts do not squeak, I guess because centrifugal force pulls the alternator horizontally against the block? Anyway... What leads me to believe sabotage is I haven’t had my alternator serviced in over a year, it’s practically still new. Here's the kicker, another bolt is missing from where the upper A arm on the pass side fastens to its mounts near the engine mount. The bolt on the firewall side is completely missing along with a half inch gap between the A arm and the rubber grommet. This is by now means safe to drive on IMP, or is it? The car has been in the shop recently for suspension work, but only for ball joints. The question of the hour is, do these things happen normally or should I start looking for other signs of possible sabotage?
