Saabs are just as good as Volvos when it comes to safety. Which one is better? Don't know, just put it this way - both are head and shoulders above most anything else out there.
I hit a patch of black ice on the highway, and at 65MPH spun and slammed into a concrete bridge abuttment. The car kept spinning, and slammed the rear into the concrete side of the bridge.
The car came to a stop, and my passenger and I opened the doors and stepped out. The front and rear crumple zones had crumpled - the car was a mess. But the passenger compartment was untouched - the doors opened and closed, the sunroof opened and closed, and all the windows (execept for the hatch) were intact. My passenger and I were unscratched.
This was a 1986 900T, with no airbags.
How safe is a convertable? Less so than a sedan, because of the loss of structural rigidity in not having a roof. But I would take a Saab 900 CV as the safest convertable out there. And I'd take a 900CV over just about any small Japanese or American sedan.
I went out and bought another Saab right away - a 9000. The 9000 was listed as the safest car in Sweden, based on fatalities per 1 million miles. The 900 was right behind.
