Well, I've used Steam Clean and Gunk and various other engine cleaners on warm if not hot engines. Yes, I avoid spraying cold water on exhaust manifolds and turbos, but I've sprayed the various cleaners around there and they smoke somewhat. On my old 84 (RIP) 900T, the current 87 900T, the RIP 87 760T volvo (it had deteriorating wiring harness...just replace the darn harness and be done with it...repairs are a kludge), and a current 90 volvo 740T.

The only trouble I've had was if I didn't start the car up and go for a drive after washing the engine...at least 20minute drive. Seems the evaporating water/solvent, etc., gets into the distributor and if the engine/turbo doesn't get warm enough to dry it out, when you shut off the engine the remaining water condenses in the distributor and the car may not start.

THAT's when you need the roll of paper towels and can of WD40! Open the distributor, wipe it out, spray WD40, wipe THAT out, put it back together and get going again.

I've never cracked an exhaust manifold by spraying cold water on it...maybe if it was red hot.....knock on wood.
