If the gas cap is aged at all, replace it. Cheap, easy, and the most common source of gas smell in compartment. The other is the sending unit retainer. Remove the cargo floorboard, on the right (as you are facing from the back of the car) is a circular rubber seal. Pull it out, and you will see the sending unit retainer - a big black cap, with two sets of wires coming out of it. See if there is any residual fuel around the cap, and sniff it for gas smell. You may just have to tighten the retainer. Use a scewdriver and lightly hammer it, unless you have the special saab tool to tighten it.
