starter lockout wiring: NOW I'm confused

Converting my '88T auto to 5spd, got almost everything in place, but there was this to worry about:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=281906
So after looking at Bentley manual pictures I attached the two "boot" connectors to reverse light switch, which made the reverse light behave as it should. YAY. Figured that the two wires left must be from the starter lockout circuit, but discovered that the motor cranks whether they're connected or not. What gives?
I'm not too concerned as long as the motor actually runs today when I reconnect the fuel pump and ignition fuses, but I'm wondering if this is a stable solution for Winter driving or just a lucky, arbitrary electric fluke/short that could reverse/disable itself at any time...
Anybody know any multimeter tests that can positively ID what these two extra wires are supposed to be doing?
