Here is the story: car (1988 cvt 5 spd) stopped in gear at the gas station when it gets hit by a little old lady backing up to a pump. No damage apparent and the car drives away. Next day shifting into 3rd . . . nothing . . . except "blender" noises. No movement. Turns out gears 1-4 and reverse are completely gone with only 5th remaining. All gears are still easily selectable and, up until this point, the (recently rebuilt) transmission never ground, popped out of gear, whined or exhibited any problems.
After determining that both driveshafts and joints were all OK i drained the trans fluid and opened up the three plates. Under the one closest to te front of the car i located the problem. The splined brass collar the connects two portions of the (steel) gear assembly that rotate around the layshaft has stripped. This means that power from the engine in gears 1-4 is not being transfered to the main shaft and then onto the wheels.
Here is a link showing these items. http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=255698
The brass collar is at the bottom left of the photo. The layshaft itself runs through the middle of this assembly (i think).
So here's the question: Can the layshaft be withdrawn from the transmission casing enough to allow the gear on the lower right side of the photo to drop out and be replaced (along with the collar)with the transmission still in the car.I think i would have to at least dismantle the differential to do this (no problem because the end plate is already off.
Any assistance is appreciated . . .
