Thanks so much for the information damien. It's all starting to make sense now.
As far as the coupler goes, mine has this funny goldy colour to it that i have not seen in the photographs of it (where it definitely looks like steel). Strange.
Like you, I had initially thought that the snap ring had just fallen off and allowed the coupler to slide forward (disengaging the two portions of the shaft). I was all ready for a quick fix (having done a little saabnet reasearch beforehand). However, once i got the plate off i found that it was very clearly stripped. The snap ring was firmly in place and the coupler was in the correct spot however, the two visible portions (coupler and gear) turned indepedently with and awful grinding sound- the kind of sound you get when you strip a head on a phillips screw. Once i pried the snap ring off i was actually able to slide the coupler forward slightly into a region of undamaged splines (adjacent to where the snap ring had been) and regain full transmission function in all gears.
I will be obtianing a new coupler and gear. Although i haven't called them yet, it looks like Ericksen might have the greatest chance of carrying these parts (i do not see them available at eeuroparts or saabsite). I could also head out to the wreckers and try my luck i suppose. Do you have any suggestions for sourcing these parts?
Again, thanks so much for your invaluable advice- hooray for saabnet!
