Its an interesting thought,
I know in my area of Maine. There are about 5-6 being driven, part time - full year. I see SPG's evey so often, most are usually a bit chewed up.
I have just recently purchased an 89 SPG black, this car seems to be a normal vehicle in my area, as opposed to my 75 99 which are sooooo incredibly hard to come by. Excluding car shows, and SAAB owner meets, I have only seen three other running 99's in the past four? years. Keep in mind I am only counting the 99's that I see in motion.
In comparing 99's to SPG's, it would be more appropriate to first compare 99's to c900's. In the 99 realm, the EMS/78 Turbos seem to carry the most interest and enthusiasm. They were the most luxurious and carried the most sport/power. In thinking with c900's the SPG is exactly that, the sport model, the luxurious model, the most sought after (in most eyes). If any c900 model was to last through the years, the SPG would probably be the most wanted.
I do think that in another 10 years I will be thinking about SPG's as I now think about 99's in general. Although recently 99's have had a bit of a blossoming on this site, which is healthy for their survival. The enthusiam seems to be inconsistent. With SPG's there is such a constant flow of ownership that I could almost see them lasting longer and traveling further than the 99's have. Just ask yourself, would you want to drive an 85' 900 SPG in the year 2015, when the vehicle is thirty years old? if so, go for it. Im proud to say that my 99 will be turning thirty in 2005.
Its an ongoing struggle, but worth while,
DAnH
