85 SPG - What to look for when buying used? Posted by Adam [Email] (#344) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Adam) on Tue, 16 Nov 2004 02:00:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi there. I'm in Oakland, CA and have a shot at getting an 85 SPG for a very good price.
I do plan on taking it to a locak Saab specialist, one of the guys listed in the mechanics section here, for a once-over so I know what I'm in for. The previous owner could probably have taken better care of it, by the looks of things. Having been an auto mechanic, and spent the last 10 years wrenching on and tuning motorcycles, I can do a lot of work myself, but I also know that a few bucks spent on a check-over by someone who is very familiar with that make can save me in the long run.
But what should I be looking for as obvious no-gos? Anything I would not expect (i.e., smoking turbo, ripped CV boots, and so on)?
If it's not worth fixing, I may well part it. The body cladding is all there and in good shape, the three-spoke alloys look fairly clean, and much of the bodywork is in good shape. Also, the car comes with a complete factory shop manual in four big blue binders, which will certainly be up for sale if I part the vehicle.
Thanks for any help/answers that can be provided!
