...it is still in there, which is a good thing given what you discovered with your wideband 02. I do not have any audible detonation under any circumstances, at any RPMs. I have always run a one-way valve in the vacuum line from the throttle housing to the turbo distributor to eliminate vacuum advance (but allow boost retard). Have you tried this?
As for my engine's safety, I don't even think about it anymore. I have been running 9-10 psi for almost 30K miles, with no problems and no audible detonation. In addition to the turbo LH 2.2 ECU, I run 24lb Ford injectors, a Bosch 3.0 FPR, stock '92 900 intercooler and ducting, and of course always 93 octane gas. I have a fairly primative Nordskog air/fuel gauge, which gives me lean/rich readings in light bar form, and it reads one bar towards rich under heavy acceleration, and sweeps nicely at idle and under normal driving conditions. The car recently flew through MD emissions despite my hollow cat...it barely even registered anything at all. By the way, the '91 2.1 motor has 287K miles on it!
All this said, I should just get it on a dyno and see what's really going on. Plus, it would be nice to know just how much power I am making!
