The guy in the new Cadillac lost 15K the first day he owned his car and will lose about 30K in the first two years--yeah he's real bright. The vast majority of people you see in new cars don't own them, the bank does. But it gets worse. Unless they put at least 40% down (and no one ever does)they probably owe more money than their car is worth--a lot more. Probably 98% of the people driving cars less than three years old are upside down (I'm in the car business). If you see someone in a new top of the line BMW or MB, they're going to throw away at least 60K in three years. The fact is that you have more equity in your car than most of the high rollers do. Now you can snicker too.
