I got my rear calipers apart. Mostly. The pistons thread onto a bolt that runs the length of the cylinders up the center, so they can be removed either by turning the pistons to unscrew them out of the cylinders OR by turning the allen-key adjuster on the backside CLOCKWISE. The allen key is offset from the threaded bolt and, I presume, geared to it in some weird intermittent way which naturally reverses the effective direction of rotation, and frequently feels like turning the allen key isn't doing anything but it does, just very slowly. If you had pads and a rotor in place turning the allen adjuster clockwise would in some sense be "lockwise" inasmuch as it extends the piston and tightens the pads onto the rotor, but without those it just pushes the piston until it comes out (you'll have to give the caliper a couple good cracks on a block or something to remove the piston completely).
I can't see either the handbrake lever seal or whatall is going on inside the piston; there are further assemblies that are held in place by snap rings with VERY little clearance for pliers. To get those out I'll have to spend for the very slim pair of Snap-Ons I saw in a catalog.
I hate getting them this far apart but not all the way. They should work for the moment, however, and once I have more time, better snap-ring pliers, and a digital camera I'll redo these and post some pictures somewhere...
