I been using EP 75W gear oil and Gear Moly in 3 cars for the past 10 years with no problems. I would have two concerns about using motor oil; 1) the detergents are designed to suspend particles so they don't stick to the non-moving parts. I'd think the last thing you'd want in a gearbox is to keep the particles suspended. 2) motor oil doesn't have EP (extreme pressure, GL5) additives that prevent the oil from getting squeezed out between the gears.
Has anyone tried Saab's latest gear oil?
We also need to face the fact that the 5-speed is a cobbled up mess based on the later 99 4-speed which was a upgraded version of the original 99 primary gear drive 4-speed that was designed for the 1.7L engine. The original design was very robust for the 80HP it carried.
