I've always had reservations about using engine oil in trannies even though it seems to be the fad now. Engine oils contain large amounts of stuff that are of no possible use in a tranny, and don't contain stuff that would be.
Years ago I had correspondance with Saab USA then Saab Sweden about the tranny lube issue. They told me that gear lube was the ideal lube, but they started specifying auto oil as an alternative when too many impatient owners in cold climates were blowing their synchos by forcing shifts before the tranny had a chance to warm up. They admitted that the motor oil was less than ideal and would increase the chances of pinon bearing probs etc later on, but that since their no #1 concern was getting the car to last through the waranty period, and syncho probs tended to happen soon, while pinion bearing probs not until 100K +. Now we have better motor oils now than then, but we also have better, thinner gear lubes, why on earth no use them?
Where you live/drive has a lot to do with the best choice.
