The earlier 9000's (9k) were easier to work on than my current ('88) 900, and the 9k design is 80's vintage rather than 1960's vintage (anathema to mention on this BB). 9k's also carry a bit more handle better on the highway, are shorter (easier to parallel park) and have more durable transmissions.
Ideal for him would probably be a 1990 9000 5spd non-turbo. (lack of a turbo means fewer expensive things to go wrong, lower propensity for abuse etc). You might do well to buy one and then immediately drop 1000-1500 to fix all the immediate/preventative problems rather than face nagging maintence issues (shocks, ball joints, waterpump, radiator hoses, tires, clutch - whatever else the mechanic can find).
Best of luck
