A good place to start is to get a good socket set that has all the metric sizes from 4mm to about 17mm. It's good to have the non-metric sizes too. You'll need a bunch of open-ended wrenches too.
I've seen the sets of tools that are packaged together at sears or home depot and for 200 dollars or less you can get almost everything you'll need. It's a lot better than buying everything separately and you'll more than have the tool instead of having to go out to get it.
Other automotive tools would be a digital volt meter (DVM), a vacuum pump (mityvac), a vacuum gauge, and a timing light. These tools are around $30 each.
