My favorite special tool is a Lisle socket for the top shaft of the front shocks. makes life easier.
Others have mentioned nut drivers and small sockets. My favorite sockets are 7mm and 10mm flex sockets for a 1/4' drive handle and extensions. I use them all the time and find them better for the hose clamps than my regular nut drivers.
While a step beyond the basic diy, I love my hydraulic press. Invaluable for wheel bearings and suspension bushings. Less than $150 from Harbor Frt or JCwhitney.
Finally "The BFH" for popping balljoints and tierod ends(and hitting things in general). A short handled 3 lb steel mallet is about right.
