The fuel return line loops around & sticks into the side of the pump canister at the bottom. You can see it in this photo. That's a little nozzle (ejector or jet pump...) that squirts into the canister, drawing gas in from the tank.
That may have broken off, so now it looks like that hose goes nowhere? But really, you just have to turn & tilt the pump canister while taking it out of the tank. That plastic nozzle & stuff is probably brittle...
Next 'hint' for ya... When I changed my pump, I found that all the black rubber parts swell in the gasoline. (Like the big mounting grommets for the pump motor.) I had the canister out for a couple days waiting for a new pump, then nothing fit together. I soaked the rubber parts in a jar of gasoline, then it was all OK.
