Eiron- I'd be confused too.
There's a lot to the design of audio components, matching amps and speakers. I don't like to compare electricity to plumbing. I keep those two as far apart as possible. :-)

Even if others disagree with me...you should probably still look this stuff up in books to decide what to believe and what to do. Or call a place like Crutchfield. Hopefully they'll tell you what I told you. Put two 8ohm speakers in-line (parallel) and you are doubling your resistance, pushing against a 4ohm load. Similarly if you put two 4ohm speakers together in parallel, you'll be pushing against a 2ohm load. That's when people get into the most trouble. Daisy chaining the speakers. They start creating a resistance that amps just aren't designed to push against.

Most radios will have at least 4 speaker outs. LF, RF, LR and RR. In the amp section of many radios these are independent of each other. Attaching an 8ohm speaker to each one of these doesn't require any math. It's just 8 ohms on each output. The speakers are not wired together in any way - each is wired to it's own speaker output.

To answer the 8ohm home speaker question - the answer is that most people don't understand or care about resistance loads on speakers. To most people watts = volume. More watts, more volume. And for the vast majority of people that simplicity is just fine.

Good luck in the experiment and please post again to let me know what you find out.
