Pulled All Fuses 1-by-1 Posted by Pete [Email] (#2000) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Pete) on Thu, 6 Jan 2005 09:48:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A couple of months ago I received some 'great' tips regarding ways to determine what is draining my car battery dead after approx. 4 days of being idle. It's just that I couldn't actually try those suggestions until after my school semester ended.
Briefly recapping, my battery would drain after several days of not driving my 1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertable. No lights were left on, or anything obvious like that. Alternator charges the battery well, so I don't think its a bad alternator.
Sitting idle, my car battery is supplying 0.130 Amps to the car (130 mA). Unfortunately, my User Manual doesn't specify if this is too high or low, but it must be too high if it drains the battery.
So I pulled each fuse, 1-by-1, to see what part of the electrical system might be the cause. However, none of the fuses affected the current draw. Then I remembered something posted earlier regarding the voltage regulator (apparently attached to the outside of the alternator). If this voltage regulator is using FET's, and a FET fails in a closed position, then it acts like a mini-space-heater and kills my battery.
What do you think? Should I attempt to find this regulator and test it? I think I see it when looking down at the alternator, and if I am correct, it's going to be a trick to access it...
Happy driving...Pete.
