you're better off staying with redline or using another non-EP gear oil. The consensus of the discussions over the years has been "once you have gear oil in the transmission, don't use motor oil." The reasoning is that motor oil has detergents that will put particulates that had settled and stuck to the transmission case into suspension; the pinion bearing and other bearings will get eaten up.
Beats the heck outta me why it started engaging better (unless you knocked a burr of the mechanism that was preventing it from engaging fully.)
