Manual Transmission Swap. What to have around?

Sorry for the long question…
My transmission is failing in my 89 turbo manual, and I am planning on swapping it with an 85 turbo manual transmission that has recently been rebuilt (in the last 60k).
I am wondering what is needed on hand when I put the 85 on my 89? I understand that i need the shifter linkage and centering mechanism.
CV boot grease? for just the inner drive?
Seals and gaskets?
Anyone with experience that can pass on advice would be much appreciated.
For someone on a small budget what is a must to replace? Money saved is great, money wasted by not replacing something and consequent damage to other components is to be avoided.
I have tried searching the BB but nothing definitive has come up.
Also, once I have my 89 tranny out, I was thinking of maybe rebuilding it myself to have it on hand. Maybe this is a question that I could find answers to in the performance section, but how possible is it to change the gear ratio to make first more worth while and have fifth be more of a highway cruising gear and get better mpg? Can you get a hold of said gears easily, or swap with other model years? Just a thought…
Thanks for the help.
